Babylon is a village located in Suffolk County, New York. At the 2010 census, it had 12,166 inhabitants. It is located approximately 25 miles from New York City, Queens border, and 33 miles from Manhattan. It is officially called The Incorporated Village of Babylon. Babylon Town and Village were once part of Huntington Town and were known as Huntington South. It was settled lightly since 1689. The main industry was harvesting salt hay which was used for cattle bedding and feed. Babylon quickly became the main gateway to nearby barrier beaches including Fire Island. This position remained until the construction of the Captree Causeways that allowed automobile access to the Babylon shore. The United States Census Bureau states that the village covers 2.8 miles, of this, 2.4 miles is comprised of land, and 0.3 miles is water. Babylon Village is bordered by West Babylon to the west, North Babylon to the east, West Islip to the east, and the Great South Bay to the south.
