History of the Farm

In 1876, the Brigati Family came to New York and settled on Long Island where they purchased land, planted vegetables, and began raising their family. Potatoes had become Long Island’s most important cash crop by the early twentieth century. To meet the expanding demand, the Brigati family boosted potato output on the farm. Suffolk County farmers collected at least 2,500,000 bushels of potatoes in 1910. And that was only the start.

The Great Depression also changed the face of agriculture. Many farmers went bankrupt but the Brigati family pushed through. They raised their own food and helped their neighbors who were struggling through the economic crisis. The family’s hard work paid off because at the end of the Depression, Long Island farms started to focus on other crops and the Brigati family was very eager to expand.
