Southampton, also known as the Town of Southampton is located in New York’s southeastern Suffolk County. It lies partly on Long Island’s South Fork. The town’s population was 56,790 at the 2010 United States Census. Southampton is part of the Hamptons stretch of coastline. The Town of Southampton is home to Stonybrook University’s Southampton campus. The town was established in 1640 by settlers from Lynn, Massachusetts. They obtained the land from the Shinnecock Indian Nation. They were Thomas Halsey and Edward Howell, Edmond Farrington, Allen Bread, Edmund Needham; Abraham Pierson The Elder; Thomas Sayre; Josiah Stanborough; George Welbe, Henry Walton, and Job Sayre.
